Tips to Boost Your Well-Being

2020 was a really difficult year for most people. With a global pandemic in full swing, many people lost their jobs, were isolated at home, and endured several hardships related to the lockdown. When our lives change dramatically, we may slip into depression, or feel massive amounts of anxiety. It is important to recognize these feelings, rather than ignore or bury them within. If you feel like you are stuck in a rut, you are not alone. However, there are some activities you can perform to lift your spirits. Here are some tips to boost your well-being: 

 

Practice Mindfulness

The first step to understanding your feelings is to practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is a form of meditation in which you focus on your senses and feelings in the present moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind, and help reduce stress. In order to deal with your feelings, you must first be aware of them. These exercises can alleviate racing thoughts that tend to consume you. After practicing mindfulness, some report that they can regulate their emotions and improve their concentration abilities. 

 

Cultivate Relationships

Living in the year 2021, you may feel alone and separated from the rest of the world. Many people are experiencing a void when it comes to relationships with family, friends, and even strangers. It is partly due to the fact that when we do go into the community, we must stay 6 feet apart, wear masks, and avoid social gatherings. These restrictions can lead to depression, lack of motivation, and decreased wellness. 

It is important that we set aside time and energy to cultivate relationships that feed your internal world through video chats, phone calls, texting, and any other form of communication. We now can connect with our loved ones via these channels in ways that were never around for our ancestors. Calling a loved one and talking to them for just a few minutes can completely alter your mindset. If you ever feel like having a good laugh, sharing a deep conversation, or giving a simple hello … pick up the phone and call a friend! 

 

Get Sufficient Rest

There are three things we must do in this world to survive: Eat, drink, and sleep. Eating and drinking may be an easy task for most people, but we know getting sufficient sleep is easier said than done. To keep a positive frame of mind, you must give your body essential rest to restore functionality and energy to take on the next day.   

When you experience restlessness, this can lead to irritability, agitation, and stress. Studies show that sleep deprivation has a significant effect on your mood. For some people, you may perform your nightly ritual and still end up staring at the ceiling all night. It is important to find an activity that encourages you to fully decompress and wind down for the night. Whether that be reading, meditation, or music. Find something that works for you!
